Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
