Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
